Mei Qi, a talented 12-year-old girl from Jalan Kukoh, one of Singapore’s lower-income neighbourhoods, earns her place in a prestigious all-girls secondary school. Surrounded by girls of better backgrounds, Mei Qi feels self-conscious as she struggles to relate with her classmates. On this first day of school, Mei Qi realises that the world is bigger than her own backyard.

In 2035 Singapore where dialect has been formally reintroduced to Chinese schools, Kun is an English-educated teacher who transfers to a Chinese school. He is assigned Dakota, a dialect tutor, to assimilate into the dialect-speaking institution. Kun needs to prove his dialect proficiency or risk losing his job as the sole provider of his family.

The Tans gather at their family house for a Reunion Dinner on the eve of Chinese New Year. However, the atmosphere is different ever since the passing of their father, there is always a subtle tension that lingers among the Tans. As the Chinese New Year's Eve unfolds, the tension escalates to new heights, culminating in a significant family dispute. Amid the chaos, every unspoken sentiment is laid bare. Yet, through the chaos, the dysfunctional family unexpectedly discovers the true spirit of familial bonds, emerging under the most unforeseen conditions.
